E-prescribing is a prescribing method that sends a prescription from the provider's software to the pharmacy over a secure network, replacing paper, phone, and fax.

What it means
Most e-prescriptions in the United States travel over the Surescripts network, which connects prescribing software with pharmacies. The prescriber's system can check the patient's medication history and flag interactions, the pharmacy receives a clean electronic order, and both sides can track its status. Prescriptions for controlled substances use a stricter version called EPCS.
Many states now require most or all prescriptions to be sent electronically. E-prescribing is often shortened to eRx.

Why it matters to a brand operator
E-prescribing sets the pace of the patient experience. An order that reaches the pharmacy in seconds can ship the same day, while a faxed or phoned order adds delay and errors. It also shows the brand where each order stands, which feeds customer support and shipping updates.
Routing matters as much as speed. A brand should know which pharmacies its prescriptions go to, whether patients can choose their own pharmacy, and how the price changes if they do.
